PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus, reducing power consumption of a fixing part. SOLUTION: In a printer including an electromagnetic induction heating type fixing part, in performing a job for forming images of one to three pages on three sheets, when the sheets are passed in the lateral direction, a total image length value Ls is calculated by totalizing the lengths A1, A2 and A3 in the carrying direction of image areas formed on the respective sheets. Subsequently a total image length value Lt is calculated by totalizing the lengths C1, C2 and C3 in the carrying direction of image areas when the sheets are passed in the longitudinal direction. The passing direction to make the value smaller is selected between Ls and Lt. The sheets in the selected sheet passing direction are fed out one by one from a paper feed cassette, and image formation is performed on each sheet. The power supply to an induction coil of the fixing part is controlled to reach a temperature required for fixing while a formed image on each sheet passes the fixing position of the fixing part, and the power supply is stopped while an area without an image passes.
