Method for identifying a section of computer program contained in a computer storage system

The method involves breaking down the computer program section into segments (S1-S4), and program commands included in the computer program section that are used to define a program flow relationship between the segments. The characteristic data associated with the program flow relationship of the segments are determined. The characteristic data are compressed to form a signature to identify the computer program section. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for identifying computer program section held in computer memory system; (2) method for comparing machine-executable computer programs to ascertain degree of match; and (3) method for ascertaining matches in machine-executable computer programs or computer program sections held in computer memory system.
