Cpds. of formula:- X = O, S, N-alkyl R = satd./unsatd. aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic, acyl or acyloxy-substd. aliphatic, OH n = 2,3 As antifungal agents, active against Aspergillus, Trichophyton, Microsporum and Candida spp. Also for the detection of bacteria in liquids. By condensing (II) with (III), where Y = H or NO2, followed by nitration if Y = H A mixt. of granatan-3-one (0.1 mole), 5-nitro-furfural (0.2 mole) and Ac2O (50 ml.) is refluxed for 3 hrs. to yield 2,4-bis(5-nitro-2-furfurylidene) granatan-3-one (63%), m.p.226-8 deg. (i-PrOH). |
