The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each H or C 1-4 alkyl and R<SP>3</SP> is Br or C 1-17 alkyl. The compounds are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula wherein X is Cl or Br, with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in a 2-phase system consisting of (a) a water-immiscible organic phase and (b) a concentrated alkaline aqueous phase or a solid phase of powdered alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. |
