<p>1,212,002. Coating polymeric substrates with metals. MACDERMID Inc. Nov. 9, 1967 [June 14, 1967], No. 50952/67. Heading C7F. Prior to electroless coating polymeric substrates with metals such as Ni, Cu and Co, the substrate is immersed in an aqueous emulsion of an organic compound selected from the group consisting of highly unsaturated fatty acids, the esters, amides and imides thereof; mono unsaturated fatty acid amides and imides; highly unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons; highly unsaturated alicyclic compounds; aliphatic polyethers, the adducts and esters thereof; tertiary aliphatic compounds, the esters, amides and imides thereof; and aliphatic substituted aromatic compounds containing at least one benzylic hydrogen, and then oxidizing the substrate in a solution of chromic/sulphuric acid. The substrates specified are polypropylene and ABS type resins. The organic compounds used in the aqueous emulsion may be in their natural or crude form such as castor, linseed, tall or tung oil or wood resin. Specific examples are given of emulsions containing linseed oil, turpentine, linoleic acid, surfactant, deionized water and potassium hydroxide to produce a neutral or slightly alkaline emulsion. Following treatment with the emulsion the substrate is (a) rinsed, (b) oxidized in chromic-sulphuric acid, (c) rinsed, (d) immersed in a phosphoric acid solution, (e) rinsed, (f) activated in a solution containing palladium chloride, HCl, stannous chloride, sodium stannate and water, (g) rinsed, (h) etched in fluoboric acid, (i) rinsed (j) coated with Cu or Ni by electroless deposition, (k) finally electro-plated.</p> |
