<p>Metal surface is immersed in an aqs. dispersion (A) of polymer (B), pref. a polycarboxylic acid resin, containing a dispersant which cannot be separated (C) and pref. a pigment. Direct current voltage is applied to conductor and aqs. dispersion until layer of sufficient thickness is deposited. During or after plating, at least part of (A) containing (C) is mixed continuously or intermittently with a dispersion of (B) in a volatile dispersant in order to enrich (A) in (B). Volatile dispersant is evaporated from aqs. dispersion while (C) in (A) is present in sufficient amount to stabilise dispersion of (B), and the bath portion enriched in polymer is added with the plating bath. Pref. volatile dispersant is an N-containing cpd. pref. NH3 or an amine, and non-volatile dispersant contains alkali metal ions.</p> |
