Provided are a polycyclic compound having a n-conjugated heteroacene skeleton crosslinked with a carbon atom, a nitrogen atom, an oxygen atom, or a sulfur atom, and a halogen compound which can be used for the synthesis of the polycyclic compound. Also provided are an organic electroluminescence device which has one or more organic thin film layers including a light emitting layer between a cathode and an anode, at least one layer of the organic thin film layers containing a material for an organic electroluminescence device, and which shows high luminous efficiency and has a long lifetime, a polycyclic compound for realizing the same, and a halogen compound serving as an intermediate for the polycyclic compound.
