A milling machine comprises a spindle head 10 to which is mounted a pair of spaced tracks 11, (12) (Fig. 5, not shown), around which a chain 30 is moved to present tools T at a work station opposite a workpiece W. Each track 11, (12) is split into a fixed lower half and a movable upper half which is spring biased by springs 20 to tension the chain 30. The chain is made up of tool holders 34 having fixed arms 35, 36 which are coupled together by a shaft 33 having rollers which engage the tracks. Each holder 34 includes a tool holding collet (38) rotatably mounted in bearings (37). The chain 30 is moved one increment at a time by an hydraulic cylinder assembly 40. In operation a required tool T 1 is brought opposite a workpiece W and a spindle in the spindle head 10 is lowered hydraulically to engage the collet (38) and to press the tool holder 34 against supporting surfaces (23), (24) (Fig. 5, not shown), which accurately locate the toolholder 34. The chain 30 is pulled away from the tracks slightly against the springs 20 to allow this. The spindle drive comprises an axially fixed sleeve (63) rotated by a bevel gear (65) through which is hydraulically moved a spindle shaft 72. |
