Ruthenium complexes with nitriles, which complexes preferably have the formula RuXmLn, where X is halogen, L is a saturated or monoethylenically unsaturated aliphatic mononitrile containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms or benzonitrile, m is 2 or 3, n is 3 or 4 and the sum of m and n is 6) may be obtained by reacting a mixture of ruthenium halide (suitably of the formula RuX3, where X is Cl, Br or I) and a nitrile (preferably as denoted by L above). The reaction is preferably effected by employing a large excess of nitrile and heating, e.g. at 50-150 DEG C., and optionally in an inert organic solvent in the presence of metallic ruthenium. The reaction may be effected in an inert atmosphere and a polymerization inhibitor may be present. Examples are given of the preparation of the above preferred complexes and also of the preparation of other complexes wherein the nitrile employed is a dinitrile. |
