Polyols are produced by reacting an epoxidized ester of a natural fatty acid having the formula <FORM:1100404/C3/1> wherein R is an alkyl group with up to 10 C atoms, R1 is an alkyl or alkylol group with up to 10 C atoms or a [(CH2)xO]yH group, x and y being an integer up to 7 and from 2-21 respectively, q and r being 0 or integers up to 4 and 3, respectively, and s being an integer up to 9, is reacted with an unsubstituted monohydric or dihydric alcohol of up to 5 C atoms or with a compound of the formula (A) HO-[(CH2)nO]nH wherein n is an integer up to 5. Catalysts specified for the reaction are BF3 and its etherate. The polyols may be reacted with polyisocyanates, possibly in the presence of polyethers, polyesters, polyoxyalkylene ethers of monohydric phenols which may have a paraalkyl substituent of up to 9 C atoms, plasticizers, fillers and dehydrating agents, to give polyurethanes, e.g. as castings and coatings. |
