[Also in Division H5] In an electroslag remelting process, the depth of immersion of the electrodes 1 in a molten slag pool (3) within a mould 2 is controlled by a hoist 9, 10, 12 powered by an electric motor 12<SP>1</SP>. The motor is operated in response to the variation of the current passing through one or more of the electrodes 1 by means of a single controller 13. The controller may be arranged to operate the motor in response to the sum or average of the currents flowing to the several electrodes. Alternatively, a separate hoist and motor may be provided for each electrode (1) in the mould (2) and the position of each electrode is then sequentially controlled by a single controller (13) sequentially sampling the current passing in each electrode by a selection switch (16) and operating the respective motor according to the signal received. The mould 2 is cooled by a water curtain from a header (not shown), around the upper periphery of the mould. A plurality of moulds each with an electrode (1) may also be brought under the control of a single controller (13). With a single phase A.C. supply the electrodes are connected in parallel, but with a multi-phase supply they are connected to respective phases. |
