In a textile spinning or like machine, control members are provided for reducing the size of the balloon formed by the yarn and are positioned one above and one below the maximum apparent balloon diameter, each control member being disposed in the plane normal to the axis of the spindle and including the generated figure of revolution of the point of intersection of the tangent to the balloon at the guide eye or the traveller, according to the section of the balloon, and the vertical tangent to the apparent maximum balloon diameter. As shown, the upper control member 21 is positioned in the plane of the point of intersection of the tangent Tg of the balloon at the eye 13 and the tangent Vg to the balloon at its apparent maximum diameter, and the lower control member 25 is positioned in the plane of the point of intersection of the tangent Tt to the balloon at the traveller 9 and the tangent Vt at the maximum diameter. The upper control member 21 may be supported from the lappet rail 11 by a bracket 23 and move in unison therewith and the lower control member 25 may be connected to the ring rail 7 by a bracket 27. Alternatively the control members may be operated from an independent reciprocating mechanism.
