The device (10) has a box (11) including an optical measuring unit (12) that measures a short distance separating a spherical ball (2) from a jack (4), and integrating a screen e.g. LCD screen. The measuring unit has laser cells positioned opposite to the ball. The laser cells emit orthogonal laser beams (13) in the direction of the ball to vertically and/or horizontally scan a surface of the ball. A sensor e.g. laser sensor, receives the laser beams reflected by the surface of the ball. A calculating unit calculates the short distance from a set of distances covered by the ball surface.
