PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air suction type sheet carrying device having good sheet carrying performance with no double feed and no suction error for moving the uppermost sheet to a vertical position suitable for air suction and stably sucking the uppermost sheet to a sheet suction carrier while suppressing damage to the sheet. SOLUTION: The sheet carrying device includes an air discharge device 14 for discharging air to a sheet-carrying-direction downstream side 2B of a bunch of sheets 2, an air suction device 13 for sucking the uppermost sheet to a sheet carrying belt 12C with air suction, a non-contact type downstream side uppermost sheet detecting means 15, a contact type upstream side uppermost sheet detecting means 16 placed on the upper face of the uppermost sheet at an upstream side 2C, and an energizing means 23 for energizing the upstream side uppermost sheet detecting means to thrust the uppermost sheet downward in the vertical direction.
