POWER CONVERTER

A power converter is configured by interconnecting in series the AC side of a main inverter (1) which comprises a high-voltage DC power source (5) and operates with a low frequency using SiC-MOSFETs (3) of a high voltage-resistance Vx exceeding 600V and the AC side of a sub inverter (2) which comprises a low-voltage capacitor (8) and operates with a high frequency PWM using Si-MOSFETs (6) of a low voltage resistance Vy. The sum of voltages generated by the main inverter (1) and the sub inverter (2) is used to output an AC power of a predetermined voltage waveform. In other word, the SiC-MOSFETs (3) are used for only the main inverter (1) which requires high element voltage-resistance, and the Si-MOSFETs (6) are used for the sub inverter (2) which requires comparatively low element voltage-resistance, thereby reducing a conduction loss by an inexpensive circuit constitution.
