The system has a flywheel (31) including multiple gear teeth arranged at a predetermined distance along a periphery of the flywheel, where each gear tooth includes two sections with different distances from the center of the flywheel. The gear teeth are formed in same shape in a direction of the periphery of the flywheel. A crankshaft sensor (32) outputs signals of different forms according to the flywheel. An engine control unit (34) detects a rotational direction of the flywheel, and measures a position of a crankshaft according to a shape of a signal curve. An independent claim is also included for a method for shortening a start-up time of an internal combustion engine of a hybrid vehicle.
