PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine capable of accurately determining the soil amount of washing liquid and controlling a washing process and a rinsing process even when the type of a detergent is different. SOLUTION: The washing machine includes a washing liquid state detection means 10 for detecting the state of washing liquid, and a control means 12 for controlling water supply, washing and rinsing operations depending on the output value of the washing liquid state detection means 10. The control means 12 compares the output value of the washing liquid state detection means 10 at a prescribed water level determined beforehand from the start of water supply to an outer tub 2 and an inner tub 3, with a predetermined value, discriminate a powder detergent and a liquid detergent, and determines the threshold of determining the state of the washing liquid by the discrimination result. Thus, even when the type of the detergent is different, the soil amount of the washing liquid is accurately determined and the washing process and the rinsing process are controlled.
