A process for production of heavy alkylate comprises (a) contacting one or more C 8 -C 16 olefins in the liquid phase with silica-alumina at 0-200‹ C.; (b) alkylating an aromatic compound in the presence of an alkylation catalyst with at least part of the resulting product of (a); and (c) separating heavy alkylate from the resulting alkylation product. The silica-alumina may carry oxides or salts of transition metals, such as Ni, Co, Cr or mixtures thereof. The alkylation catalyst is preferably AlCl 3 or HF. Preferably the whole product of step (a) is fed to the alkylation step (b), and the product of (a) is brought into contact with the aromatic compound and the alkylation catalyst at the same time as one or more C 8 -C 16 olefins which have not been treated with SiO 2 - Al 2 O 3 . |
