PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image which can serve as a reference concerning the position of a vehicle tail part without using special software. SOLUTION: A vehicle backward image pickup device 1 includes: a rear camera 20, which is mounted on a vehicle rear part to obtain rear image by picking up the rear of a vehicle; and a tail position indicating member 24, which is mounted on the vehicle rear part and arranged within the view field of the rear camera 20. The tail position indicating member 24, a member other than a rear bumper 30 of the vehicle, is arranged to the rear camera 20 so that an image A of the tail position indicating member 24 may be located at a position that serves as a reference concerning the position of the vehicle tail part in a rear image.
