The method involves testing a proximity switch after starting, and storing an identical 8-bit long, keyword in a primary or secondary storage area (51,52). A releasing signal is generated at an output (Va) of the proximity switch in the form of an overcurrent. A compensation mode is activated by the identical keyword and the releasing signal. The measurement of a detection unit (30) is stored as a switching distance in the active compensation mode. The keyword is canceled or overwritten in the secondary storage area. An independent claim is also included for a proximity switch with a detection unit and a control unit.
