1,222,522. Marine jet propulsion; air cushion vehicles. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 30 April, 1969 [30 Jan., 1968; 23 Feb., 1968], Nos. 4712/68 and 8897/68. Headings B7K and B7V. A propulsion plant for a hovercraft or ship comprises an impeller 19 directing a jet of air with entrained water droplets through an annular nozzle 20, the droplets being produced by a wheel 3 rotated by the impeller-driving engine 23 at a peripheral speed greater than the forward speed of the vehicle. The depth of immersion of wheel 3 is controlled by a jack 7, which can also move the wheel to a position for supporting the vehicle on land, the jack then acting as springing for the vehicle. The speeds of impeller 19 and wheel 3, and the ratio of the speeds, may be varied. A grille 16 is rotated relative to a cutter 25 to remove debris. Wheel 3 may be formed with paddle blades or provided with a ribbed tyre. Splash guard 17 may be movable to control the spray entering impeller duct 13. For slow-speed manoeuvring, wheel 3 may be used as a paddle wheel.
|
