PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting leakage in a gas-gas heat exchanger having a structure which can figure out the positions and a quantity of leakage pipes during plant operation and which allows repair countermeasure during plant operation. SOLUTION: The gas-gas heat exchanger is composed of groups of heat transfer tubes 11, 12 closing an entrance with stop valves of a heating medium. When the leakage of the heating medium occurs, after closing the stop valves 44-47 of a heat transfer tube block which is an object of specifying the leakage position, a cap 36 mounted to a T-joint 35 is removed. A closing tool 38 is inserted from that part to close a header pipe base 34. A tool 39 with a pressure gauge is connected to the T-joint 35 for boosting by a pump, etc., and the presence/absence of the leakage is determined by pressure decreasing in the heat transfer tubes 11, 12. If the leakage pipe is predetermined, the tool 39 with the pressure gauge, the T-joint 35, and the closing tool 38 are removed before the pipe base 34 is cut outside a casing 37. A closing plug 40 is welded to the end of the pipe base 34. The leakage position of the heat transfer pipes is predertermined even while operating the plant to allow the repairing.
