PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can perform appropriate toner rearrangement, and appropriately cope with the toner contamination if happened on a toner rearranging electrode. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a developing device which develops an electrostatic latent image on an image carrier to form a toner image; the toner rearranging electrode which is arranged at a downstream position of the developing device to be faced to the image carrier, and has a transparent base substance and a transparent electrode formed on a side faced to the image carrier on the transparent base substance; an electric power source which applies an alternating voltage to the toner rearranging electrode; an optical sensor which is arranged on an opposite side to a surface of the toner rearranging electrode faced to the image carrier and detects the toner contamination on the transparent electrode; and a control means which performs control of removal of the toner contamination on the toner rearranging electrode based on a detection signal of a toner contamination state from the optical sensor.
