摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an engine and a control device for the same, performing self ignition without using an ignition plug even in a low-load area by further raising temperature in a cylinder by the more effective use of temperature of the large amount of residual burnt gas. SOLUTION: The valve closing timing of an exhaust valve and the valve opening timing of an intake valve are set in order to form a negative overlap period with both the intake valve and exhaust valve closed from the middle of an exhaust stroke and the middle of an intake stroke in the low-load area. Fuel is injected into a cylinder during the intake stroke and an air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber is burnt by the self ignition by the compression action of a piston. As an engine load is lower, the valve closing timing of the intake valve is delayed or advanced to be deviated from timing with the amount of air filled maximized at engine speed at the time.
