PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base material of artificial leather constituted of a dense nonwoven fabric structure comprising bundles of ultrafine fibers and of an elastomer permeating the nonwoven fabric structure, with the elastomer unevenly distributed toward the surface layer of the nonwoven fabric structure in the thickness direction thereof. SOLUTION: The highly dense nonwoven fabric structure is impregnated with a solution of an elastomer or an aqueous dispersion thereof from both sides, and is subsequently subjected to roll-nipping at a deformation rate in the thickness direction thereof of not lower than 0% and lower than 25%, and thereafter the elastomer is coagulated.
