PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormality in a power transmission mechanism in the runup to occurrence of locking or the like in friction engagement elements. SOLUTION: A control device for vehicles includes a drive source E, a power transmission mechanism 5 which has the friction engagement elements whose engagement state can be changed and outputs the power from the drive source E to the driving wheel side, a control means which controls the engagement state of the friction engagement elements, an odor component detection means 13 which detects an odor component in the power transmission mechanism, and a failure prediction means 10a which predicts a failure of the power transmission mechanism based on the odor component detected by the odor component detection means.
