Provided is a new and improved display device and control method, wherein the state of an image displaying device can be optimized for a user at an arbitrary position. Disclosed specifically is a display device provided with: an image pickup unit that picks up video images within a prescribed range in the image displaying direction; an image analyzing unit that analyzes the video images picked up by the aforementioned image pickup unit, and calculates the position of the user; a system optimization processing unit that calculates system control information for optimizing the system, on the basis of the aforementioned user position calculated by the aforementioned image analyzing unit; and a system control unit that optimizes the system, on the basis of the aforementioned system control information calculated by the aforementioned system optimization processing unit.
