The method involves determining a current commuter route and a remaining distance of the route from a current position of a motor vehicle to a destination. A covered distance from a starting point to the current position of the vehicle is determined. Profile data of vehicle fuel consumption standardized to 100 percentage of distance between the starting point and the destination is provided to a driver by a profile data providing unit (104). Fuel requirement for the remaining distance is determined based on the profile data and is displayed to the driver by a display unit (106). An independent claim is also included for a navigation system for assisting a driver of a vehicle during driving on a commuter route between two specified locations.
