PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that an ink mist adheres and piles up on the surface of an encoder scale, resulting in poor reading. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a carriage 4 on which a recording head 11 for ejecting liquid droplets is carried and which moves in a main scan direction, and a linear encoder which consists of the encoder scale 15 arranged along a moving direction of the carriage 4 and an encoder sensor 16 carried on the carriage 4 to read the encoder scale 15.
