Particulate coal is carbonized in two stages: (a) in a fluidized bed 3 at a temperature in the range 500‹ to 600‹ C., and (b) by entraining the coal in an inert gas in a vertical stack 7 at a temperature in the range 700‹ to 900‹ C. The first stage is heated by recycling semi-coke at 14, 4, and the second stage by a burner 8 supplied with air for combusting the distillation gases and tars from the first stage which enter a chamber 6 through an orifice 10. Carbonized coal enters the chamber 6 at 9, and is carried up the stack 7 by hot combustion gases to a separation chamber 13. Semi-coke product leaves at 15. The orifice 10 may be replaced by an external line which contains a purifier, the gases being introduced at 11 to the chamber 6. Steam or inert gas is the fluidizing gas.</p> |
