PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus having contact-type image sensors disposed alternately, wherein any document in any shape is read so as not to cut all image data in the document, to provide an image forming apparatus wherein the image reading apparatus is loaded, and to provide an image reading method. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes a means for discriminating a front end and a rear end of a document, which is read by each of contact-type image sensors arranged in a staggered manner, from the document. Capturing of image data of the document is started sufficiently earlier than that the document passes through the contact-type image sensor, and the front end and rear end of the document are detected in each contact-type image sensor. In an image after correction of a delay amount, information of a front-most end of front-end position information acquired from the contact-type image sensors is defined as a front end position of the entire document.
