Disclosed is a method for charging/discharging the positive electrode active material in a lithium secondary battery. A lithium secondary battery comprises: a positive electrode having a positive electrode active material capable of absorbing/discharging lithium ions; a negative electrode having negative electrode active material capable of absorbing/discharging lithium ions; a separator which is disposed between the positive electrode and the negative electrode; and an electrolyte having lithium ion conductivity. The positive electrode active material contains a nickel series lithium-containing composite oxide and discharges the charged positive electrode until a first electric potential (VDp1) of 2.7-3.4V, with reference to metal lithium, is reached and then stops discharging. Thus, the capacity of a lithium secondary battery is ensured and the charging/discharging cycle life is increased. |
