A composition for making hard candy antitussive lozenges is a paste comprising, by weight, 3-15% of d-3-methoxy-N-methyl-morphinan (dextromethorphan) or an acid addition salt thereof, with 20-55% of a medicinally acceptable organic solvent therefor, and 10-50% of a complex magnesium aluminium silicate, 5-15% of sodium chloride and 0.3-1.5% of sodium saccharin. The preferred acid addition salt is the hydrobromide, or may be a salt of hydrochloric, phosphoric, nitric, sulphuric, acetic, benzoic, citric, maleic, malic, salicylic or tartaric acid. The solvent is preferably benzyl alcohol, or may include one or more of propylene glycol, glycerine, and butylene-(1, 3)-glycol. Other active ingredients may be present, such as local anaesthetics, e.g. ethyl aminobenzoate, or diperodon HCl; the benzyl alcohol also has anaesthetic properties. The composition may be incorporated in a hard candy base, such as a mixture of sucrose and corn syrup solids containing below 1% by weight of water, in a proportion by weight of 35 to 40 parts of the base to 0.3-1.25 parts of the paste, by warming the base and mixing in the paste, suitably with addition of colouring agents, the mass then being formed into lozenges and allowed to cool. |
