Mineral wool is produced by pouring a stream of the melted mineral on to the nips of rapidly rotating drums, said drums being arranged in pairs in the path of travel of the said stream, each drum being adapted to withdraw a thin layer from the said stream, the drums of the lowermost pair being arranged sufficiently close together so that each drum withdraws one half of the remaining part of the stream. The said layer is carried from the path of the said stream by adhesion to the periphery of the drum and tangentially separated from the periphery in fibre form by centrifugal force assisted by a stream of air. The peripheral velocity of each drum is the same but the diameter of each pair of drums may vary. |
