PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal substantially free from lead, which is considered to be very harmful, excellent in crystal characteristics, and capable of growing a crucible without damaging the crucible. SOLUTION: The bismuth-substituted rare earth iron garnet crystal further includes an element to become a divalent cation in addition to a composition represented by the composition formula: Bi<SB>3-x</SB>R<SB>x</SB>Fe<SB>5-y-z</SB>M1<SB>y</SB>M2<SB>z</SB>O<SB>12</SB>(R: one or more elements selected from lanthanoid metals (excluding Eu) and Y; M1: one or more elements selected from Ga, Al, Sc, Si, Ti, Sn and Zr; M2: one or more elements selected from V and Nb; and 0.5<x<2.5, 0≤y<2.0, and 0<z≤0.05).
