PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To calculate the vehicle speed accurately under all the road environments regardless of any road circumstances. SOLUTION: The speed calculating device detects the accelerationα<SB>z</SB>in the Z-axis direction generated by an undulation of the travel surface and the pitch rateω<SB>y</SB>around the Y-axis generated by an undulation of the travel surface respectively using a triaxial acceleration sensor 4 and a Y-axis gyro sensor 5, and calculates a speed V using the accelerationα<SB>z</SB>and pitch rateω<SB>y</SB>to further correct the speed V in accordance with the speed, thereby allowing the speed V accurately under all the road environments to be calculated.
