PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent impairment of flatness of a sheet bundle back face regardless of the number of binding position and binding places of a staple needle. SOLUTION: This spine formation device includes a butting part 330 having a plurality of grooves (m) inclined in the mutually separating direction for storing a projection part from a sheet bundle SB of the staple needle of saddle stitching in a butting surface, and a changing means for changing the interval of a groove of the butting surface in a position abutting on the fold line tip SB1 of the sheet bundle SB. Pressure is gradually applied to the downstream side from the upstream side in the folding sheet carrying direction of the center-folded sheet bundle SB, and the fold line tip SB1 is butted against the abutting surface, and the fold line is swelled under pressure, and the swelled part of the fold line tip is held between pressurizing sandwiching plates 325 and 326, and processing is performed for flatly forming the fold line tip of he sheet bundle SB.
