PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fire protection device arranged under an expansion joint, which surely prevents flames, smoke or the like from intruding into the side of the expansion joint through a gap between building frames in a fire, and moves integrally with the building frames without causing damage regardless of the horizontal and vertical relative displacement between the building frames in an earthquake. SOLUTION: The fire protection device includes: refractory plates 5, 6 which are provided in a horizontally-extended manner like a cantilever at a predetermined vertical interval on the opposed walls of the building frames 1, 2 which are opposed to each other via the gap 3; and a foamable refractory formation material 7 arranged on the upper surface of the refractory plate 5 below. In the earthquake, the refractory plates 5, 6 move integrally with the building frames 1, 2 without the front ends thereof abutting on their facing walls of the building frames 1, 2, and further without the foamable refractory formation material 7 abutting on the refractory plate 6 above. In the fire, the foamable refractory formation material 7 is expanded by heat so as to be pressed against the lower surface of the refractory plate 6 above, thereby preventing the flames and smoke from moving upward.
