An improved portable radio frequency reader for reading and writing data in a microchip applied to a vehicle comprises a logic control unit, a communication group, one or more data interfaces, and an antenna for receiving and transmitting data from and towards the microchip. The reader operates at about 13.56 MHz and is set to a maximum communication distance from about 11cm to about 30cm. The reader is included in a kit for an automatic vehicle identification system of the type comprising RFID tags.
