<p>PuO2 is produced by reacting PuF6 with stoichiometric excess of H2 and (gas containing) O2, e.g. steam, at 700-1200, pref. 800-900 C and 3-50 mm Hg. pref. 2 to 10-fold excess of H2 for HF formation and 3 to 10-fold excess of O2 for PuO2 formation are used. PuF6 gas pref. is contacted with O2 first, then with H2. PuO2 can be sintered is not 2 hr. at 900-1500 C in atm. containing H2 at partial pressure of 25-100 mm Hg containing 4% H2 and 96% A. This gives pure PuO2 containing 10 x 10-4% F. Great advantage of process is that it can easily be incorporated in fuel processing plant. It is simple and suited to remote control.</p> |
