PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To end variable display even when some kind of error occurs when transmitting and receiving a stop pattern specifying command. SOLUTION: In the case that all of three stop patterns of one stage among the respective display areas of an upper stage, a middle stage and a lower stage which are units for variably displaying patterns can not be received or in the case that the array of the patterns do not match with the array of a virtual pattern reel even when two or three stop patterns of one stage can be received, the pattern codes of the other stop patterns of the stage can not be calculated from the pattern code of one stop pattern. In this case, instead of a stop pattern which is not specified or a stop pattern which is erroneously specified by the stop pattern specifying command, a default pattern stored beforehand in the program ROM of a control board for display is used as the stop pattern. Thus, even when some kind of error occurs when transmitting and receiving the stop pattern specifying command and the stop pattern can not be normally received, the variable display can be ended.
