PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable setting of a plurality of dimming operation modes in order to carry out stepwise dimming to carry out dimming by two steps, continuous dimming, or illuminance correction in a discharge lamp lighting device having the same main circuit and control circuit, and furthermore make an operation mode changeover switch unnecessary. SOLUTION: The dimming control circuit 4 has a first memory means 7 to memorize dimming data beforehand in order to form a first dimming signal, a second memory means 8 capable of writing dimming method data, and an arithmetic processing means 6 in which according to the dimming method data read out from the second memory means 8, the dimming signal data memorized in the first memory means 7 are read out and in which the first dimming signal is calculated and formed according to the selected dimming signal data. The dimming method data are made to be memorized in the second memory means 8 according to the selected signal based on a prescribed procedure to be input into the arithmetic processing means 6. A selective input part to input the selected signal based on the prescribed procedure inputs the selective signal from outside the discharge lamp lighting device, and has a connecting terminal capable of transferring electric signals.
