Particulate filter for an internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine has an exhaust with a monolithic porous particle filter (10) with an inlet (12) and outlet passages (13). Each inlet passage traverses one or more outlet passages, from which it is separated by a filter wall. Each inlet passage discharges to a particle settlement chamber in which soot particles accumulate. The filtered gases leave via a common outlet (21). The inlet passages (12) are parallel and at right angles to the outlet passages (13) that discharge into a common collection pipe. The inlet passages and outlet passages are sandwiched side-by-side in adjacent batteries. The settlement chamber has a cap closure for removal of the soot particles.
