Heading A5B [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] A composition suitable for use as a plasticizer in resin-containing hairsprays comprises an esterified polypeptide soluble in anhydrous ethanol and a cationic surface active agent. The hairspray composition also comprises a film-forming resin in solution in anhydrous ethanol. The polypeptide may be produced by base hydrolysis of a protein such as keratin, collagen or gelatin and esterified with EtOH in the presence of excess EtOH and H 2 SO 4 , thereby directly obtaining a solution in EtOH. The film-forming resin is preferably a copolymer of vinyl acetate with crotonic, acrylic, maleic or methacrylic aoid which has been wholly or partially neutralized by an aminoalcohol; shellac; vinyl methyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer; vinyl pyrrolidone polymers including copolymers thereof with vinyl acetate ; or ethyl cellulose. The surface active agent is a quaternary ammonium compound having an aliphatic chain of 12-22 carbon atoms. Perfumes and silicones may also be present in the composition, which is preferably contained in an aerosol package with a liquefied propellant. |
