A vehicle suspension comprises a pair of longitudinal arms 18 pivoted about a transverse axis at their forward ends 18a to a vehicle frame 12, and connected to an axle 30 by means 31 including a pair of longitudinally spaced laterally extending pins 42 mounted in associated resilient bushings 54, and a pair of air springs 66 mounted between the frame 12 and a transverse torsion beam 60 connected to the rear ends 18d of the arms 18 through torsionally resilient bushings 74. The mountings at the forward ends 18a of the arms 18 include resiliently bushed pins 20, and the means 31 comprise upper and lower pairs of brackets 32, 34, the arms 18 being held between the upper pair 34 by the pins 42 which have transverse bores adjacent their ends receiving anchoring bolts 48 secured by nuts 50. Each air spring 66 bears on a platform 62 on the beam 60 and a vibration damper 70 connected between the frame 12 and an extension 72 on the arm 18 controls spring rebound. Lateral movement of the arms 18 is limited by shoes 94 mounted on the arms 18 bearing against wear plates 98 mounted on the vehicle frame 12. The vertical position of the arms 18 with respect to the axle 30, and the angular position of the axle with respect to its own axis may be adjusted by inserting shims 56 above or below the ends 44 of pins 42. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the beam (60a) comprises two portions (102), (104) welded at their outer ends to the ends of the control arms 18 and fitted together at their inner ends in concentric relation with an interposed sleeve of elastomer material. In another modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the two beam portions each have a flange (108) at their inner end secured to an interposed body of elastomer material (110). |
