The invention comprises 1,4-dihydroxy-8-aminoanthraquinones containing in the 5-position an optionally substituted amino group and in the 7-position an optionally substituted alkoxy, phenoxy, mercapto or thiophenoxy group. The anthraquinone nucleus may be substituted by halogen atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting a 1,4-dihydroxy-8-aminoanthraquinone containing in the 5-position an optionally substituted amino group and in the 7-position halogen or a phenoxy or sulphonic acid group with a mercaptan, thiophenol, alcohol or phenol, and thereafter halogenating if desired. The halogen may enter both in an external aryl nucleus and in the anthraquinone nucleus.
