Heading C2C. α-Amino- #-lactams are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of a water-soluble salt of the aci-form of the corresponding α-nitro-#-lactams, the hydrogenation being carried out in the presence of a Raney catalyst comprising nickel alloyed with at least 0.1% by weight of chromium, based on the nickel. The example describes the preparation of α-amino-E-caprolactam from the ammonium salt of the corresponding nitro compound. |
