[Also in Divisions E2 and F2] A two-piece fastener 10 for securing together a metal sheet 16 and a wood or fibre member 14 comprises a tubular rivet 18 having a head 22 and a shank 20, and a mandrel 30 having a head 34 engageable with the end of the rivet shank 20 and a shank 32 having a breakneck groove 42, so that when the mandrel is pulled into the rivet by a tool (not shown) the concave under-surface 54 of the mandrel head 34 deforms the end of the rivet shank 20 to form an inturned head 56 and overlies the inturned head before the mandrel snaps at 42. The mandrel has a splined portion 36 which expands part of the rivet shank 20 into engagement with the members 14, 16 as the mandrel is pulled into the rivet.</p> |
