The present invention provides a backlight drive device including a plurality of backlight units for each of which a unique address is automatically set using a simplified configuration, in which backlight drive units (101) to (115) are sequentially connected to a backlight drive control portion (14) via a serial signal line (131) by a daisy-chain method, and through this, the backlight drive control portion (14) transmits an address-assigning signal sequentially to each of the units before sending luminance data. Also, the backlight drive control portion (14) is directly connected to the backlight drive units (101) to (115) via an IIC bus (132) by a bus method, and through this, the backlight drive control portion (14) receives light-quantities and temperatures detected by the units identified by the addresses as mentioned above. This configuration allows automatic setting of unique addresses, which makes it possible to use common backlight drive units.
