The device has a sleeve part (10) pre-mountable on a sanitary equipment item (30) e.g. wash basin, and insertable into a fastening opening (31) of the item. The sleeve part is in engagement with a wall screw projecting from a wall while mounting the item on a wall. A locking part cooperates with the sleeve part such that the item is fastened by a traction force on the screw. The sleeve part transfers the force when the sleeve part is assembled to the screw, where the sleeve part includes projections. The locking part exerts the force when assembled on the item. An independent claim is also included for a method for attachment of a sanitary equipment item using a fastening device.
